Tinahely village is situated in the valley of the river Derry amidst rolling hills and in the heart of scenic countryside. Tinahely is located on the Wicklow Way route.
A village full of history, several of its buildings were burned down during the 1798 rebellion. Many buildings were rebuilt in the 1800’s by the Fitzwilliam family who resided in nearby Coollattin House and the village then thrived as a market town.
Today there are many buildings of historical interest in Tinahely including the Market House, in the centre of the village, which was once the village courthouse and jail. During the 1900’s it was home to one of the village schools and regular village fair days. It is now the home of our local library.
Other places of historical interest in Tinahely, include the restored 1843 Courthouse, now a centre for the arts with regular exhibitions, concerts and drama productions, the old mill and local churches.
More recently, Tinahely has been enhanced by new buildings, businesses and homes. Along with these a beautiful railway walk has been opened linking Tinahely to the Tomnafinogue Woods, one of the last remaining oak forests in Ireland.
The Tinahely Show which is held locally on August Monday is one of the largest agricultural shows in Ireland. Along with many festivals, an abundance of local groups and organizations, Tinahely is a scenic and thriving village with a rich heritage and a strong sense of pride and community.
Many thanks to Jonathan Mullin for these beautiful images of Tinahely.
